Bern, Switzerland’s
capital city was founded in 1191. It was built on a forested
peninsular on the River Aare with felled trees used for building
houses. In 1405 most of the city was destroyed by fire. and then
rebuilt in sandstone. The city possesses a captivating charm,
with historic towers, colourful Renaissance fountains, 6 km of
shopping arcades, a stunning cathedral, medieval architecture
and spectacular views of the Alps. It well deserves its place on
the prestigious list UNESCO World Heritage sites, to which it
was admitted in 1993.
