Pictures Chur,
Switzerland. Although Chur is one of Switzerland's oldest
cities, it has kept up with the times. Cultural events, bars,
clubs and museums as well as chic shopping in large and small
stores all add to the appeal of Graubunden's capital. Celts,
Romans, Ostrogoths, Frankonians all took turns at ruling Chur as
the gateway to crucial trade routes and Alpine passes. Testament
to its 5000 years of history are Neolithic, Bronze Age and Roman
finds as well as more recent, impressive buildings, such as the
diocesan city’s 800-year-old cathedral. On a guided tour,
history buffs will discover a wealth of information from the
past, with gruesome evidence of civil uprisings as well as more
pleasant evidence from peaceful times. Chur remains a trading
city and the capital of a large region, evident not only from
the many shops, museums and theatres but also from the postbus
station, the hub for access into Graubunden’s Alpine world. Chur
has its own summer and winter sport area with the Brambrüesch,
its home mountain with easy access by aerial cableway. The area
is popular with hikers in summer and skiers in winter. A visit
to the local vineyards with wine tasting (of course) is highly
recommended. Chur is also the gateway to the mountains of
Graubunden and within an hour’s reach of 26 holiday resorts.
