Chur is one of the
oldest cities in Switzerland, and with a population of around
34,000 is the capital of Canton Graubunden. The eastern part is
the old town with picturesque winding lanes holding many
historic buildings such as the 800-year-old St Luzius Cathedral
Church. The Rhaetian Museum, Museum of Fine Arts and Natural
History Museum are all well worth a visit. Over 100 restaurants
offer gourmets a choice of Graubunden and international
specialties and fine local wine. The Obere Au Sport Centre on
the banks of the Rhine provides a wide range of energetic
attractions including beach volleyball, BMX biking, horse
riding, inline skating, jogging, skateboarding and tennis, as
well as having indoor and outdoor swimming pools. Chur is a
departure point for fabulous railway journeys including the
Bernina Express on the Albula route from Chur to St. Moritz and
Tirano, the Glacier Express to the Matterhorn, the Arosa Express
to the world-famous holiday resort and the Heidi Express to
Davos. An exciting one-day railway round tour of Graubunden can
be made from Chur aboard the Bernina Express and the new Engadin
Star.
