Pictures Geneva,
Switzerland. Geneva, capital of the Swiss canton of the same
name situated where the Rhône issues from the Lake of Geneva.
As the European seat of the UNO and headquarters of the Red
Cross, Geneva has earned the name “capital of peace”.
Dominated by St. Peter’s Cathedral, the old town quarter is the
heart of Geneva, and the Place du Bourg-de-Four, the city’s
oldest square, is the heart of the old town. But Geneva is far
more than a historic showcase. The city offers lakeside quays
and promenades, chic shopping, vibrant streets and numerous
pretty parks to explore. The Horloge Fleuri, a colourful flower
clock in the Jardin Anglais (English Garden), symbolises
Geneva’s watch industry. The «mouettes», a sort of water taxi,
crosses from one side of the lake to the other and larger
passenger boats offer lake cruises. Geneva is also a city of
culture with the Grand Theatre and Geneva Opera House, where
performances by international artists draw large audiences. The
city also has a wide variety of museums, including the
International Red Cross Museum and the Musée international de
l'horlogerie, with a collection of jewellery, watches and
musical clocks. The Palace of the United Nations is also well
worth a visit. Anyone wishing to travel a little further afield
can head for Mont Salève in neighbouring France. An aerial
cableway takes visitors up to a vantage point at 1100 metres
above sea level, with views of Geneva, Lake Geneva, the Alps,
the Jura and Montblanc.
