The “Olympic Capital”
since 1994, Lausanne is built on three hills overlooking Lake
Geneva. Picturesque vineyards stretch up the southern slopes
behind this French-speaking Swiss city, while weather
permitting, the Alps are clearly visible across the lake. The
city’s medieval centre is laced with small alleyways, boutiques,
cafes and restaurants, more than 16 of which feature in
top-ranking gourmet guides. But not only are the restaurants par
excellence. The city’s cultural programme is also richly varied,
providing the genial French-speaking Swiss with plenty of
opportunity to “let their hair down”. Those seeking peace and
quiet can while away the hours on the lake, in the parks or in
the vineyards – not forgetting to sample the delights of the
local wine. And last but certainly not least, Lausanne is home
to the Olympic Museum, the most visited museum in Switzerland.
