The Trümmelbachfälle,
to give them their German name, are a succession of 10
waterfalls which plunge down in impressive cascades through a
twisting gorge carved through the Schwarze Mönch (Black Monk)
mountain by the thundering waters. Up to 20,000 litres of water
per second surges down from the glaciers and snow of the mighty
mountain massif, the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, each peak around
4000 metres high. The falls are illuminated, and made accessible
by an inclined lift in the rock walls. The Trummelbach Falls are
Europe’s only accessible glacial waterfalls actually inside a
mountain and are open to the public from mid-April to the end of
October.
