Locarno is situated at
the northern-most tip of Lake Maggiore in Canton Ticino,
Switzerland’s ‘sun lounge'. The town is reputed to have the
mildest climate in the country, enjoying around 2300 hours of
sunshine annually. Every year, Locarno’s Mediterranean climate
and ambiance lures countless visitors to the charming 16th and
17th century alleyways in its old town quarter, the Città
Vecchia. The lively Piazza Grande, the heart of the town and
close to the lake, is famous for the International Film Festival
held there every August, when thousands of film fans fill the
elegant square. Locarno is set amidst subtropical plants, with
palm trees, bougainvillea, camellias, cypress, magnolias and
oleanders flourishing along the lakeside promenade and spreading
up the wooded slopes that overlook the town. In addition to its
southern setting and feel, Locarno is also an ideal departure
point for numerous excursions, for example a cruise on Lake
Maggiore, an aerial cableway ride up to Cardada-Cimetta,
Locarno’s nearest mountain or a trip to explore the nearby wild
and wonderful valleys.
