The spectacular Susten
Pass links the villages of Wassen in Canton Uri and
Innertkirchen in Canton Bern. The pass primarily serves tourism
and so is one of the last to be cleared of snow, often remaining
closed from the beginning of November until June. Driving from
Wassen, the road climbs through numerous tunnels and then leads
up the Meien Valley, where the craggy peaks of the
Fünffingerstock come into view. Towards the head of the valley,
the road winds steeply up through tight bends to the top of the
pass, at 2224 m above sea level, from where the view spreads
over the Meien Valley to the Sustenhorn. After a short tunnel, a
large car park and the Susten Hospitz makes the ideal spot for
refreshments. Affording stunning views of the Gadmen Valley and
the Stein Glacier, the road then curves down on the Bernese
Oberland side of the pass to the village of Gadmen at 1295 m
above sea level and then Innertkirchen at 625 m. From here you
can drive over the Grimsel Pass or continue towards Meiringen
and beyond.
