Picturesque Thun sits
astride the River Aare at the western end of Lake Thun in the
Bernese Oberland. Its enchanting castle and quaint medieval old
town quarter make Thun well worth a visit. The charming shops
along each side of the narrow Obere Hauptgasse are set on two
levels. The cobbled street leads to the splendid Rathausplatz
(town hall square) with its well-preserved, picturesque medieval
buildings. From various places in the old town, steps lead up to
Thun’s 12th-century, turreted castle which today houses a
historical museum. The stunning views from the castle reach
across beautiful Lake Thun to the volcano-like Niesen, the
Stockhorn and as far as the snow-capped trio of the Eiger, Mönch
& Jungfrau. Thun is also known as the “gateway to the Jungfrau
Region” and is an excellent departure point for countless
excursions.
