The world-famous health
resort of Zermatt is located in the west of Switzerland, on the
border to Italy. It nestles at the foot of the majestic
Matterhorn, probably the most photographed mountain in the
world. But the Matterhorn is just one of the many 4,000-metre
high mountains that are clustered around the village. Mountains
which have drawn mountaineers from around the globe since the
Matterhorn was first scaled by Englishman, Edward Whymper in
1865. Zermatt is seventh heaven for sports fans in both summer
and winter. Its extensive skiing and snowboarding region is the
highest-altitude in the Alps, with snow-covered ski slopes
guaranteed every day of the year. Zermatt air is crystal clear;
only electrically driven vehicles have been permitted in the
village since 1947. Gourmets will also be in their element;
Zermatt's restaurants are world-class, as are its hotels.
Visitors find that the village embodies the awe-inspiring
picture-postcard image of Switzerland. Zermatt is truly in a
class of its own.
